Boost print consistency with a DIY temperature probe

Add a cheap thermistor probe to your hotend and tighten temperature control in minutes.

Takeaway

A homemade temperature sensor can shave off up to 10 °C of overshoot, giving smoother layers.

What happened

We printed a 20 mm calibration cube using the stock thermistor and recorded temperature spikes of up to 12 °C. After installing a calibrated NTC thermistor with a custom firmware tweak, the spikes fell under 3 °C and surface finish improved noticeably.

Why it matters

Temperature overshoot is a silent killer of dimensional accuracy and surface quality, especially on PLA and PETG. By tightening the loop you reduce warping, stringing, and the need for post‑processing.

How to think about it

Start with a reliable NTC thermistor, mount it close to the nozzle tip, and update your firmware’s PID settings. Test with a simple tower and iterate until the temperature settles within ±2 °C of the setpoint.

Pros
  • Cheap (<$5)
  • Immediate print quality boost
  • Easy to revert
Cons
  • Requires soldering
  • Firmware tweak needed
  • May void warranty
Watch out

Ensure the probe’s wiring can tolerate the hotend’s heat to avoid insulation melt.

FAQ

Can I use a standard 100kΩ thermistor?

Yes, but you’ll need to adjust the resistance table in your firmware to match its beta value.

Do I need a new hotend?

No, the probe fits most stock hotends with a small zip‑tie mount.

Will this affect my slicer settings?

Only the temperature profile; keep extrusion rates the same.
